70s hippie mode!

Hello to you, Bohemian, today we are going to talk about the hippie movement and its 70s style!☮️ I want to clarify for those who are not familiar, that a hippie is not just a drug consumer at the Woodstock festival. They are much more than that! They seek above all to leave Babylon, to free themselves from the Western system to deliver a message of love and peace to the world❤️ Come with me in the DeLorean and let's see together how we can reclaim the remnants of this sublime era to apply it to our lives today! 🤩

A brief historical reminder about the hippie movement:

hippie group

The free hippie fashion of the 1970s reflected the youth culture's response to the strict ideas and conservative values of the 1950s and 1960s. Defined by their carefree and relaxed attitude, hippies adopted a more eclectic and laid-back style over the years. It symbolizes above all peace, love, and equality for all. Artists like Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane popularized hippie fashion. It consisted of mixing ethnic clothing, colorful patterns, loose fabrics, and some essential accessories (headbands, necklaces, earrings ...). All of this made the movement flower power one of the most recognizable trends of the 1970s. We also saw the emergence of several subcategories of the hippie movement, such as (Boho style or hippie chic style).

Types of traditional clothing.

Hippie women often wore loose and casual clothing such as kaftans, floral tops, long dresses, and bell-bottoms. This was a radical change from the dresses of the 1960s. The latter were more formal. Hippie dresses also changed popular fabrics; the advent of central heating in homes made it necessary to use lighter clothing materials. Wool coats were now replaced by jackets and velvet raincoats. Flowing fabrics also gained popularity. Lightweight cotton, voile, chiffon, viscose rayon, and brushed materials became standards of the era.

International inspiration

For the first time, in the 1960s and 1970s, traveling abroad became accessible to the masses thanks to airlines ✈️. Many Westerners were able to visit far-off places and bring back new inspirations as well as previously unseen fabrics. The hippie style began to incorporate foreign influences and pieces. Caftans, kimonos, djellabas, Nehru jackets from India, Africa, or Asia became the inspiration for comfortable home dresses and lightweight jackets that would become fashion items of the time. Often, these clothes were reinterpreted to have decadent and ostentatious details like golden metallic trims or sequins.

Hippie fashion

After the very structured codes of the 40s, 50s, and early 60s, the bold and revolutionary style of the hippie took over.

"People breathe peace, love, freedom, and sexual liberation, which was reflected in their fluid and relaxed wardrobes."

And it wasn't just women who loved this fashion trend: men were also often dressed with beautiful mustaches, long hair adorned with bandanas as well as beads and bright kaftans.

How to keep the hippie movement alive ?

From long dresses to peasant blouses, hippie fashion is making a comeback. But how can you wear these pieces without looking like you're dressed for a disco party?

The thing is, unlike the psychedelic hippie fashion of the 60s, where the slogan was "More was More", nowadays it’s more like: "Less is More".

So you have two choices! Either you dig through your parents' (or grandparents') closets to find vintage items, or you choose a more modern interpretation of one of these many hippie looks.

Let's now look at timeless hippie trends!

Peasant top

It may be the mark of a bygone era, but a peasant top is an easy classic to wear. Originally, a reaction to the ceremonial costumes of the 1950s and early 1960s, the relaxed style of the top is often made from natural fibers, such as cotton and linen, and can also be adorned with a folk touch. It is highly recommended to have a small embroidery on your blouse.

Hippie dress

Although the 60s were also famous for mini skirts, their opposite - the maxi dress - was also a reaction to the restrictive. With bold ethnic prints, the dresses also reflected the era's interest in tribal ethnic clothing, generally coming from cultures outside Western norms.🌏

Soft hat

Still in the hippie and relaxed style, wide-brimmed hats perfectly complete a flowing outfit. It is an I-N-D-I-S-P-E-N-S-A-B-L-E element during the summer seasons.

Bell-bottom pants

To modernize your look, I suggest a wide rounded pant at the level of your shoes, as well as a tight and flowing cut, even if the belly is exposed. Additionally, you can pair it with heels that will help elongate your legs and highlight your silhouette.

The hippie utopia makes the world happier!

How can one resist the charm of hippie sunglasses? Here, one word is key: madness! You'll find them for all tastes: pink, large, square, and triangular. Just think of one thing: freedom. An essential accessory, it will also provide necessary protection for your eyes!

Fringe

In addition to being a metaphor for hippie culture, fringe trim was also part of the hippie style, whether in leather, like on Indian clothing, or longer and shinier, it is an essential accessory for a jacket!

Since she became a hippie, Cher has always loved fringes, and she is not alone. Leather fringe is undeniably elegant on jackets, shoes, or bags. Once again, let your creativity shine. 🤩

Headbands

Whether made of a strip of fabric to hold back hair or a complex circle of flowers crowning the head, headbands were a popular accessory in hippie style, perfect for framing the free, flowing, and natural hair of the fashion.

Beaded necklaces and statements

Once again, drawing inspiration from ethnic cultures, the love of hippies has set its sights on long bead chains and multiple bracelets adorned with feathers or tiaras, mostly made in turquoise color. This color symbolized balance, peace, and serenity for the hippies!
